Good governance is at the heart of every successful organisation. However it is essential that board directors understand their natural motivators and those of the fellow directors especially the Chair. A Chair who is a natural risk taker may need some restraint just as one that is complacent may need some encouragement. A balanced board is essential and courageous NED's can be hugely advantageous provided they have been appointed on the basis they will have a voice!

The NED who is valuable to an organisation must constructively challenge and criticise strategic decisions from a point of absolute neutrality, knowledge and balance. Experience in corporate governance is essential along with an ability to maintain objectivity whilst having strong interpersonal skills enabling them to harmonise the board's personalities.
